Heli-skiing in the Chilean Andes: what a day looks like
Required level, safety, how many runs a day includes and why August is the favourite month to fly.
Heli-skiing is not only for experts, but you do need to ski off-piste safely in variable snow. Groups are small — up to 4 passengers per helicopter.
The day
Safety briefing with transceiver, shovel and probe; then several guided runs depending on conditions and weather. The flight window depends on wind and visibility.
When to go
August offers the best mix of snow base and stable days. Book ahead: spots are limited and are rescheduled in bad weather.
